FG warns that labour’s demand for a ₦494,000 minimum wage could harm the economy.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the proposed wage would be a burden of ₦9.5 trillion for the government.

He emphasized that the government had already agreed to increase the minimum wage to ₦60,000 to align with economic realities. Idris expressed concern over the 1,547 percent increase demanded by labour, warning that it could lead to job losses and negatively impact the economy.

The organized labour is set to go on strike on June 3rd due to the government’s failure to implement the new minimum wage and reverse the electricity tariff hike.
