The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called for a nationwide strike to demand a new national minimum wage and the reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike.
The strike, set to begin on June 3rd, has received support from unions in critical sectors such as oil, electricity, and finance.
The NLC has instructed its state councils to ensure full compliance with the strike. The decision to strike was made after the government failed to reach an agreement on the new minimum wage despite several meetings of the tripartite committee.
The unions have rejected the government’s offers and are demanding a higher wage increase.
Various sector unions, including Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), and National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (NUBIFIE), have also pledged their support for the strike and have urged their members to comply with the directive.
The unions are calling for a comprehensive closure of workplaces to put pressure on the government to meet their demands.
The strike will continue until a mutually agreeable agreement is reached between the unions and the government. The unions are determined to fight for a fair wage increase that will address the economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers.
