Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has urged the Attorney General of the Federation to take action against states that fail to pay the current minimum wage.
Falana argues that since the payment of the minimum wage is a voluntary agreement, states that do not honor this agreement are breaking the law. He suggests that the Attorney General should take these states to court to enforce the law.
Falana also points out that after the removal of fuel subsidy, states have more funds available and therefore cannot claim a lack of funds to pay the minimum wage.
He believes that all states in Nigeria can afford to pay more than the minimum wage. Falana is pushing for the deduction of workers’ salaries from the source to ensure that the minimum wage is paid.
