President Tinubu has instructed Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to create a blueprint for a revised minimum wage.
Today, the Federal Government will present figures to Labour Union to support its minimum wage proposal.
President Tinubu gave this directive during a meeting with the government’s negotiation team.
The strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has been suspended for a week after the President’s intervention.
The Tripartite Committee will continue negotiations throughout the week. The Senate has promised to expedite the passage of a new Minimum Wage Bill.
The strike resulted in the shutdown of the national grid and disruption of flights. President Tinubu has asked Minister Edun to provide figures to guide the government’s negotiation with Labour Union.
The government is committed to a realistic and acceptable new minimum wage. The NLC and TUC suspended the strike to create a conducive environment for negotiations. They have directed all affiliate unions and state councils to return to work.
The government proposed ₦60,000, while labour Union demanded ₦494,000. The government will consider the capacity of states and the private sector to pay the new minimum wage.
The Senate will fast-track the legislative process for the new wage law. They appreciate Labour Union for suspending the strike and wish them success in the negotiations.
