House of Representatives orders investigation over the killing of five(5) soldiers in Aba
The House of Representatives has directed security agencies in the country to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the killing of Five (5) soldiers by gunmen in Aba, Abia State. The House has instructed its Defence committees to collaborate with the Armed Forces to ensure a thorough investigation and identify those responsible for the crime. The committee has been given a four-week deadline to provide a report to the House.
Abubakar Yalleman, the sponsor of the motion, expressed his sorrow over the unnecessary and brutal murder of military personnel who were on peacekeeping missions. He pointed out that these attacks on soldiers have become a recurring problem nationwide. Yalleman emphasized that the soldiers were dedicated to serving their country and maintaining the security of lives and property in the region.
Yalleman also highlighted that these attacks on military personnel have the potential to demoralize the armed forces and put the lives and property of Nigerians at risk. He cautioned that retaliatory actions by the military could result in significant harm to the civilian population.
Babajimi Benson, the chairman of the House Committee on Defence, condemned the attacks on military and security establishments, describing them as provocative to the Armed Forces. He praised President Bola Tinubu for promptly demanding that those responsible be held accountable.
Yusuf Gagdi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Navy, expressed concern that while the House is working towards ending insecurity in the country, those who are sacrificing their lives to serve the nation are being killed by non-state actors.
The military confirmed that the attack on its troops was carried out by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The attack resulted in the deaths of five military personnel and six civilians caught in the crossfire.
In conclusion, the House of Representatives is treating the murder of soldiers with utmost seriousness and is demanding a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
