Sanusi and Governor Yusuf

Sanusi Muhammadu has officially been appointed as the 16th Emir of Kano, just a day after being reinstated by Governor Abba Yusuf.

The appointment ceremony took place at the Government House in Kano, with the presence of government officials, traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other important figures.

Governor Yusuf, citing the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, confirmed Sanusi’s reappointment as Emir of Kano.

This decision comes after Sanusi was dethroned by the previous governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, four years ago. However, Governor Yusuf signed a new law repealing the Kano State Emirate Council Law of 2019, leading to Sanusi’s reinstatement.

During the event, Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of the Emir’s role and urged him to lead with Islamic principles. He praised Sanusi’s competence, credibility, and popularity, and encouraged him to use his position to unite the emirate and promote harmony among Islamic sects in the state.

Despite a court order temporarily halting Sanusi’s reinstatement, Governor Yusuf defended the decision, stating that the state assembly had followed due process in repealing the previous law. Sanusi is expected to lead the Juma’at prayer at the Government House.

The new law signed by Governor Yusuf dissolves the emirate councils created by Ganduje in 2019, which led to Sanusi’s deposition.

Governor Yusuf described the 2019 actions as victimization and emphasized the importance of restoring the Kano Emirate to its original status.

Emir Sanusi II, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, faced controversy following his deposition.

However, Governor Yusuf’s decision to reinstate him was seen as a move to correct past injustices.

Sanusi’s reinstatement marks the restoration of the Kano Emirate to its pre-2019 status.
