Kano State Crisis: Gov Kabir Yusuf orders the arrest of former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
The Governor of Kano State, Kabir Yusuf, has issued a directive for the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
This decision was announced in a statement released on Saturday by the Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Kano, Sanusi Tofa.
Governor Yusuf stated that Bayero was to be arrested for allegedly causing unrest in the state. The statement, titled ‘Gov. Yusuf Orders Arrest of Deposed Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero,’ revealed that the former Emir had been brought into Kano city the previous night in an attempt to forcefully reclaim his position at the palace, just two days after being deposed by the governor.
The new Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi, was reported to have arrived at the palace in the early hours of Saturday morning, accompanied by the governor, deputy governor, Speaker of the state House of Assembly, and other government officials.
As the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Yusuf directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir immediately for disrupting public peace and jeopardizing the peace that the state had been enjoying.
Bayero, who had been missing since his deposition on Thursday, reappeared in Kano on Saturday. The state House of Assembly had repealed a law signed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019, which had divided the emirate into five and appointed Emirs to each.
Following the repeal of the law, Governor Yusuf gave all affected Emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand them over to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. Muhammadu Sanusi was subsequently reinstated as the Emir of Kano.
Sanusi received his reappointment letter at the Government House in Kano and led Jumat prayers there.
Governor Yusuf officially reappointed him as the 16th Emir of Kano, citing the powers conferred on him by the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, as well as the recommendation of the kingmakers.
