Government to recommence freight services on the old narrow gauge rail line connecting Lagos to Kano, says Ahmed Alkali

Minister of Transportation Ahmed Alkali has announced that President Bola Tinubu will be inaugurating the reopening of the Lagos-Kano cargo train on Thursday.

This statement was seen on the Minister’s social media page (X) on Thursday 6th June.

The Nigerian government has completed the rehabilitation of the old narrow gauge rail line and will resume freight services.

The Ministry of Transportation has already conducted a successful trial run, transporting numerous 40 ft containers from Lagos to Kano in just a few days. This railway route will create business opportunities and facilitate the movement of import and export goods between these important regions in the country.

The government aims to improve transportation services, reduce road traffic accidents, lower the cost of goods, and boost the country’s gross domestic product through this railway service.
