₦62,000 Minimum wage: Labour Union urges governors to save the country from imminent disaster.
The President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, expressed that the Labour union is eagerly awaiting the President’s response to the recommendations put forth at the Tripartite Committee meeting regarding the new minimum wage.
Initially, Labour Union had rejected the proposal, with the TUC President advocating for a minimum wage of ₦250,000. The NLC criticized state governors for claiming they could not afford even the previously offered ₦60,000 minimum wage.
The new figure of ₦62,000 was confirmed by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and TUC President Festus Osifo.
Governor Uzodimma mentioned that the recommendation would be sent to President Tinubu for approval, who would then present an executive bill to the National Assembly.
Ajaero anticipates that the President will engage in further consultations before making a final decision on the minimum wage. The NLC criticized the governors’ stance on the minimum wage, labeling it as bad faith.
They argued that the governors could manage to pay a reasonable minimum wage by reducing the cost of governance and prioritizing the welfare of workers. The NLC stressed that the national minimum wage is crucial for protecting the vulnerable and impoverished.
They urged the governors to reconsider their position in order to prevent economic decline in the country.
